A number of buildings in Morden will be home to some new art work this summer.

Several murals will be created this year to celebrate Morden as a Cultural Capital and commemorate the Chautauqua Spirit project.

Morden artist Margie Hildrebrand has been commissioned to create the Chautauqua Spirit mural which will be placed on the east wall of the Friendship Centre.

Hildebrand is no stranger to mural art, as she was the artist behind the murals already on a number of buildings in the community.

She is teaming up with Christine Block to design the mural, which she says will be a montage of paintings of photographs of people and groups in Morden's cultural past.

Hildebrand says the Chautauqua Spirit mural will highlight significant individuals and organizations, including Loreena McKennitt, Natalie Rostad, as well as the Festival of the Arts and horticultural groups.

This will be the largest of the murals being created for Morden's Chautauqua Spirit project.

"We will be painting the mural indoors on boards and then installing it on the outside wall," she noted. "And when it comes to painting of the mural, we will be getting artists from the area to assist us."

Hildebrand and Block are currently working on scale drawings for the mural to be approved by the Chautauqua Spirit committee.

She noted preparation for the design the mural has required quite a bit of research.

"When it's all said and done it will give the effect of memories flowing through the mural," added Hildebrand.
