Heritage

Cultural heritage is the legacy of physical artifacts of a group or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations. Physical or "tangible cultural heritage" includes buildings and historic places, monuments, artifacts, etc., that are considered worthy of preservation. These include objects significant to the archaeology, architecture, science or technology of a specific culture. The following museums and groups fall into this category of culture:

Archibald Historical Museum - La Rivière

This museum includes a furnished log house (1878) where Nellie McClung boarded as a teacher. A large frame house owned by Nellie McClung is furnished with pieces from the early 1900s. Her first two books were written and her first child born here. The former La Rivière CPR Station, with its distinctive mansard roof design, is the only existing example in Manitoba. A three-storey barn has an old country store, household effects, tools, buggies. Open daily mid-May to Labour Day weekend, noon - 8 p.m. Closed Wednesday and Thursday, except by appointment. Admission charged.

Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre

Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre houses the largest collection of marine reptile fossils in Canada and features "Bruce", a 43 ft. (13 meter ) Mosasaur. Discover Manitoba's prehistory and the sea monsters that lived in the Western Interior Seaway. Experience a Fossil Dig Adventure Tour along the Manitoba Escarpment searching for and excavating fossils on an 80 million year old sea bed. School, youth and group museum tours available year round. Dig tours available May to September. Summer Kids programs Monday to Friday in July and August. Open daily 1 - 5 p.m. September to May; 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. June to August.

Dufferin Historical Museum

The museum has attractive displays of pioneer artifacts such as photos, textiles, toys and other antique items. Open 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. daily, mid-June to September long weekend. Other times by appointment. Tours welcome. Admission charged.

Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame

The Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum displays memorabilia related to the history of baseball in Manitoba, dating back to the 1900s with uniforms from both past and present. An interactive computer allows visitors to read about individual inductees in the museum. Open year-round, daily 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. Donations accepted.

Miami Railway Station Museum

Built in 1889, this museum is a national historic site depicting the life and times of the rural station agent. Open June to August, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday, Sunday and holidays or by appointment. Admission charged.

Miami Pioneer Museum

This museum features a 40 foot mosasaur vertebrae and head bones of prehistoric mammals. World War uniforms, wedding dresses, tools and artifacts pertaining to the women's work of the time, a school room and a church with pulpit and organ depict the life of the early settlers. Open June to September, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Admission charged. .

Pembina Threshermen’s Museum

The Pembina Threshermen's Museum contains steam threshing equipment used by the early pioneers. Open mid-May to September, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekdays, 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. weekends. Admission charged.

Plum Coulee & District Museum

This museum houses many items relating to the early Jewish, Ukrainian, German and Mennonite pioneers and is filled with photos of Plum Coulee's start as a thriving mercantile centre. Open during summer months or by appointment.

Roland 4H Museum

With the building of the railroad in the late 1880s, homesteader Roland McDonald purchased a quarter section of land through which the rail line passed. Roland registered as the railway station in 1890. See Canada's only 4-H Museum displaying many artifacts of this far-reaching organization. Open July 1 to August 31, daily 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. or by appointment. Donations accepted.

St. Joseph Museum

This is a pioneer museum displaying several buildings, including the oldest timber house in southern Manitoba, agricultural machines and antique tractors dating back to 1927. Guided two-hour tours provided. Picnic tables, campground and drinking water available. Open daily May to end of September. Admission charged.

Star Mound School Museum

A former schoolhouse (1886) with text books, records, the Star Mound School Museum is located in a park noted for spring crocuses. A sacred Aboriginal site is also located here. Open daily, April to October. Donations accepted.

"Natural heritage" is also an important part of a culture, encompassing the countryside and natural environment, including flora and fauna, scientifically know as biodiversity. This type of heritage site often serve as an important component to the tourist industry.

  • Pembina Valley Provincial Park – This park is located just off PR 201, South of Morden and is 1.8 km2 (440 acres) in size. The hiking trails offer picturesque vantage points of the Pembina Valley and surrounding countryside. They provide various levels of intensity, from challenging hikes to relaxing strolls.

  • Stanley Centennial Park – This park is a lovely recreational park located 6 ½ km south and 5 km west of Morden on PR 432. The citizens of the RN of Stanley built it as a centennial project. The 24 hectare park is filled with natural wooded areas of oak elm, poplar, ash and birch.
