One of Morden’s many unique characteristics is the stories told through mural art on a number of the town’s buildings.
The creation of four new murals is underway to give Morden’s Chautauqua Spirit project a lasting legacy.
A Morden Rose mural will celebrate the town’s botanical heritage and will be placed on the east side of the old Hospital building (Boundary Trails Place.) The artist behind the rose mural is Irene Peters of Calgary. She will be creating the image in Calgary and it then will be shipped to Morden for mounting. The rose mural will be unveiled July 19 at 1 p.m.
The Morden Legion will also be home to a new mural that will signify and represent the Legion and enhance the perpetuity of “Remembrance” for all to see.
The mural is being designed to go on the West wall and will be approximately 32 feet wide by 8 feet high. It will depict a montage of images that depict the World Wars and other theatres of war that involved Canadian Troops. The Central focus of the mural will be the three units of Armed Forces, Army, Navy, and Air Force during World War one and two.
The Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre will be involving youth in the creation of a Mosasaur Mural for the west side of the Marathon Pizza building on Stephen Street.
The final mural will represent Morden’s Cultural Capital of Canada - Chautauqua Spirit year. Morden artist Margie Hildebrand and Christine Block are creating the mural for the east side of the Friendship Centre.
The Chautauqua Spirit mural will highlight significant individuals and organizations, including Loreena McKennitt, Natalie Rostad, as well as the Festival of the Arts and horticultural groups.
The Legion, Mosasaur and Chautauqua Spirit murals will all be unveiled August 16. For more information on exact times you can visit the website at www.chautauquaspirit.com or check your Chautauqua Spirit program.
