Story of the Stones TourThe “Story of the Stones” Tour - June 7th, 2008

 

This tour was part of the 2008 Cultural Capital of Canada - Chautauqua Spirit Project. It was a guided walking tour with a special added twist. Local actors in period costume provided a five-minute introduction to each building, noting the history and architectural significance. The tour began at the Pembina Hills Arts Centre and continued on to three other heritage properties. The above sound tracks are an audio recording of these performances.

 

 

 

Heritage Building OneONE - 352 Stephen Street

 

The Dominion Post office was built between 1913 and 1915 by the Brown Construction Company of Winnipeg. It is a sturdy block of brick with a mansard roof pierced with dormers. A tall corner clock tower was a familiar feature on many post offices and the one created for Morden is a fine example.

Performer: Jeremy Rampton—Jeremy has performed in all Poor Theatre Company productions including Zed in Cinderella Waltz, Edgar Chisholm in Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii, Ken Gorman in Rumors, and Newt in Welcome to the Monkey House. Jeremy is a graduate of Morden Collegiate where he performed in such plays as A Christmas Carol and West of Pecos. As a Drama major at the University of Manitoba, Jeremy's stage credits include roles in Romance, Beyond Therapy, The Man Who Wouldn't Go To Heaven, and What May Unfold. His backstage credits include stage manager for A Winter's Tale and set designer for Footprints on the Moon and Landscape of the Body. Jeremy was the 2008 recipient of the Irene Anderson Memorial Scholarship.

 

Heritage Building TwoTWO - 339 Stephen Street

 

A most impressive entrance with an ornate date stone combined with Romanesque arches and a rare polished granite pillar invites the customer inside. This building was completed in 1902, for Mr. C. F. Heckels, by masons Bryden and Richardson. A second storey was removed in the early 1940's

Performer: Natashia Durand—Natashia has previously performed with Poor Theatre Company in the roles of Mrs. Snow in Cinderella Waltz , Cassie in Rumors, Mrs. Helmholtz and Marion in Welcome to the Monkey House. She is a graduate of Morden Collegiate where she performed in the musical Guys and Dolls. Natashia is currently a student in the University of Manitoba Theatre Program where her stage credits include Dian Black in Escape from Happiness and Ophelia in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

 

 

Heritage Building ThreeTHREE - 577 Stephen Street

 

This commanding Queen Anne style house was built in 1899 for Dr. B.J. McConnell, Morden's first medical practitioner and MLA for Pembina from 1907—1910. The stonework was carried out by Bryden & Richardson of Morden. Originally, a verandah with a second story wrap around balcony adorned the exterior.

Performer: Tiffany Tilley—Tiffany's performance credits with Poor Theatre Company include Betty Scant in Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii and Chris Gorman in Rumors. She is a graduate of Morden Collegiate where she appeared in Rememberin' Stuff, A Christmas Carol, The Sound of Music, The Lysistrata Project, and Agatha Rex. Tiffany is currently a student at Red River College in the Animal Health Technology program

 

 

 

Heritage Building FourFOUR - 522 Stephen Street

 

This cottage style, fieldstone house was built circa 1895 by Stanley Hall, a Scottish stone mason from Kamloops, B.C. for William Hall a local baker.

Performer: Jaclyn Kozak—Jaclyn first performed with Poor Theatre Company as the “bubbly” Regan in Cinderella Waltz. She is a graduate of Morden Collegiate where she performed in A Midsummer Night's Fever and 1837: A Farmer's Revolt. Jaclyn is currently enrolled in the University of Manitoba Theatre Program.
