Loreena McKennitt Composition Competition

Young participants from South-Central Manitoba were encouraged to create compositions in several musical genres. There were two streams.

1. Music by Standard Notation - for solo instrument, voice, or any combination of instruments and voice. This stream was open to ages 12 & under (1 Prize) and ages 13 - 18 (1 Prize).
2. Song Writing - original folk and roots music (Celtic, country, blues, bluegrass, etc.). This stream was open to ages 15 - 25 (2 Prizes).

Winners were chosen by mid-August and their music was performed at the Chautauqua Celebration Festival in September. Workshops with Remi Buchard and James Keelaghan were provided to help these participants compose. In July, a one-day presentation workshop was provided to enhance their performance skills.

Loreena McKennitt was sent the 4 winning entries and asked to provide comments. The winning entries were

Each winner received sealed letters from Loreena McKennitt and a package containing several of her CD's. The gifts were presented on stage at the Chautauqua Celebration Festival. The performances at the festival were exceptional.

Parkland Rose Photographic Competition

This photographic competition encouraged local photographers to create images of the Parkland Roses. Winning entries were kept for permanent display in the community. The winners were announced at the Chautauqua Celebrations in September of 2008. The twelve winners are;

Festival of the Arts Competition

The Festival of the Arts had competitions in strings, piano, vocal and dance. Winners performed at the Chautauqua Celebration Festival in September 2008.
