Ramsay Cook, one of Canada’s best-known historians, will reflect on his career and how growing up in Morden contributed to his interest in history.
Dr. Cook has received numerous awards for his contribution to the study of Canadian history. Educated at the University of Manitoba, Queen’s University and the University of Toronto, he taught history first at the U of T and later at York University until his retirement in the mid-90s. He served as an historical advisor on the CBC television series Canada: A People's History and is the general editor of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, the definitive biographical reference work in Canadian history. He has published widely on political and constitutional history, English-French relations, intellectual and artistic life and on Europeans' explorations and first contacts with native North Americans. Cook is both a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an Officer of the Order of Canada.
The Cook family moved to Morden when Reverend G. R. Cook was posted to St. Paul’s United Church in 1946. Ramsay attended high school in Morden and, while he attended the University of Manitoba, he also worked at the Experimental Farm and at The Morden Times.
